President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine’s armed forces had “derailed” Vladimir Putin’s plans to capture Kyiv.

Following intense fighting in Kyiv which saw an apartment building in the capital hit by a missile, president Zelensky remains defiant as he urged Ukrainians to defend the nation stating: “we will give you arms,” in a video address on Saturday.

“We’ve derailed their plan,” Mr Zelensky said. He added that Russians have deployed “missiles, fighters, drones, artillery, armoured vehicles, saboteurs, and airborne forces” against Ukraine and have hit “residential areas.”

Three children were among the 198 Ukrainians killed since Russia’s invasion began, Ukraine’s health minister said today.

Viktor Liashko said that 1,115 people were injured including 33 children, according to operation data.

“We have withstood and are successfully repelling enemy attacks. The fighting goes on,” Mr Zelensky said.

UK armed forces minister James Heappey added that Russia’s invasion plan is “nowhere near running to schedule” amid fierce resistance from the Ukrainian people.
